FAQs

  • Why do I have to pay entrance fees to visit The River Café?

As the restaurant is situated inside Karura Forest, entrance fees are payable at the gate for entry, irrespective of the purpose of visit given that this is a public, Government forest reserve. We encourage our patrons to join the Karura Forest community by supporting Friends of Karura Forest (FKF) through annual membership.  There are individual and family options, and you can also purchase an annual parking membership: memberships may be used on both sides of Karura, i.e. Karura and Sigiria forest blocks. Your membership supports FKF’s continuing work in the forest.

  • Where does my entrance fee go?

All proceeds go to forest security, improvement and maintenance. Paying these fees helps us protect our forest for future generations. The River Café does not profit from fees.

  • Is The River Café a dog friendly restaurant?

All dogs are welcome at The River Café. The FKF guidelines for bringing dogs to the forest are outlined here, and for those wishing to bring your pets to the Café, please ensure you familiarize yourselves with ours.

    PET POLICY

Here at The River Café we love dogs.  However, due to the large number of pets we host, we request the observation of the following etiquette to avoid conflict of interest, and in order for our staff to provide excellent customer service for everyone to enjoy their dining experience.

    1. All dogs must be on a leash and positioned under the table or next to you.  In the interest of public health and safety, we request that pets are not placed on laps, chairs or carried.

    2. Walking around the restaurant with your pet is not allowed.

    3. We would request that if your pet is excitable at the sight of other pets you refrain entirely from bringing your pet to the restaurant.

    4. As barking creates a disturbance for other patrons, if your pet is unable to remain calm at the sight of children running or other dogs please avoid bringing them to the restaurant.

    5. Please assist us by avoiding having pets mark territory on our dustbins and flower pots.  The removal of fecal matter is the responsibility of the pet-owner – please ensure you have a paper bag available for this.

    6. All dogs brought on premises are the responsibility of their owners and as such we ask that you respect our staff and clients and manage your pet so that everyone can enjoy their experience at The River Café - Karura.
